Bedroom planning FAQs

Q: Do you have any top tips for redecorating a bedroom?
A: Before you start remodeling a room, consider who will be using it. Children may want a playroom, teenagers will need a den with space to do homework, and adults would probably like an oasis of calm and tranquility. Bear this in mind when planning colours, fabrics and furniture.

Q: We have very little space in our bedrooms, do you have any top tips for storage?
A: The wall above the bed is often overlooked – you can install wall cupboards for extra storage space. The back of the bedroom door can also be used for coats or robes, hung on hooks. Under the bed is another useful spot for organised storage. Some beds have drawers underneath but if not, boxes and baskets not only look good, they keep bits and pieces tidy. Finally, use the area around your window, for example, build a window seat or use that space for an ottoman or chest of drawers.

Q: Can you advise me on how to plan a child’s bedroom?
A: The most versatile way of decorating a child’s bedroom is by using paint. This makes it easy to paint over it as the colour becomes too babyish for them or they want a new look. You can even paint scenes or letters on the walls or ceilings to give that personal touch. You can still theme the room, with borders, pictures, posters, bedspreads and lampshades, which can easily be changed as your child grows up.

Older children will often use their bedrooms for doing their homework or playing computer games so create a desk area with plenty of storage for CD’s and computer peripherals and make sure you have enough power points to avoid trailing wires.

Q: What type of flooring would you recommend for bedrooms?
A: Your choice of flooring invariably depends on budget and taste, however, there are some important considerations to be made. Firstly, it needs to be practical so think about wear-and-tear, animals, children and staining. If you have a bath or shower in the room, you must think about slipping, damp and water staining.

You will also need to think about acoustics as unfortunately, any hard flooring will accentuate footstep noise, so you would certainly need to incorporate some rugs!

Some flooring types can actually alleviate allergies and prevent the accumulation of bugs and dust. These will help anyone with asthma or allergies and include lino, stone, wood and tiles.
