Reviews of yesterday’s budget reveal a mixed response but the general feeling from the business community seems to be that this is a budget designed to support business and growth. The government’s economic forecasts were positive and in line with the recent optimism and improvements in business our members have experienced since the beginning of the year.

KBB 2012 is now over, and from our perspective was a successful show that produced some real positives for all exhibitors – the ‘buzz’ factor was evident in bundles. Stands were busy throughout the show until mid-afternoon on closing day and from my various walkabouts, business was being done with sales orders taken, new displays ordered, new contacts made and old acquaintances renewed…it all looks good for the future.

Just thinking how popular ‘pre-pack’ administrations are in today’s marketplace, I wondered why only 1 of the Homeform brands was acquired by the former management – leaving the other brands to presumably wither and die – leaving many consumers out of pocket to the tune of £5.6 million.

It’s been a fantastic start to the New Year. The KBSA has welcomed new board members as well as new retail and corporate members.
Of course, without strong board membership, there is no KBSA – so we were thrilled to welcome David Dalglish MD of The Knaresborough Kitchen Company (a retail member since 2000), and Steve Cowburn of Countess Interiors in Preston.

When I wrote my last message, I was reflecting on the downwards trends and predictions for general trading. It wasn’t looking good for manufacturing or retailing, but I have been really heartened after chatting to several members. Whilst we can’t ignore that things are still quiet, and every bit of business has to be worked for, one Midlands member in particular had a surprisingly good Christmas period. And after chatting to him, it became apparent that it was due to a mixture of things which we could all benefit from.
