Accessible kitchen worktops

Worksurfaces form an important part of every kitchen. For anyone with impaired grip, sliding heavy items is much easier than lifting and carrying – bear this in mind and plan your worktop runs to minimise lifting and carrying.

The picture to the left shows a wheelchair user operating a height-adjustable worktop.

Look for practical safety features, such as:

  • Raised edges on all four sides of each worksurface to contain spills
  • Height-adjustable worksurfaces that can be adjusted for use by more than one person
  • ‘Wet areas’ formed in water-resistant solid surface materials
  • Colour-contrast edging for a visual cue
