Colouring up in the home
24 August 2011
Exclusively neutral shades in the home are giving way to more colour and the range of options is staggering. But there is a right way and a wrong way to colour up in the home so before you splash out in vivid tones?
The Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA) has a few tips for guidance.
In the kitchen:
- If you crave change but are not sure which colours you like, choose painted wood for your kitchen cupboards. That way it’s easy to repaint if you have a rethink and decide the colour’s just not for you.
- When going for the ultra-modern contemporary look, choose a high gloss finish in a bold colour. Plum, aubergine and red are all very popular.
- KBSA research has found that white and cream are still the most popular colours for kitchen units but it’s deliciously easy to add contrasting colour highlights with furnishings and accessories in tasty bright greens and oranges.
In the bedroom:
- Colour is a wonderful way to bring unity to a room design, but be consistent. If you go for a bold feature wall make sure you pick up the shade elsewhere in the room.
- Opt for window treatments or floor coverings which include shades from the same family of colours included in their design; otherwise the room could appear flat or unbalanced.
In the bathroom:
- A base theme of neutrals or bright whites will always be the right choice for the bathroom because they speak of freshness and cleanliness. To introduce colour consider hanging a jewelled mosaic mirror, painting the underside of your roll-top bath, adding feature tiling and accessorising with funky coloured towels.
- A wonderful way of colouring up in the bathroom is through LED lighting, the colour of which can be adjusted to suit the seasons or even your mood.
