Create a luxurious, relaxing and stylish bedroom

Your bedroom is an escape from the stresses and strains of the modern world. It should therefore be luxurious, relaxing and stylish. Here, the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA) offers some top tips on designing the bedroom of your dreams:
- If you want to incorporate the latest trends think about mixing contradicting styles such as contemporary with traditional, fitted with freestanding, along with bold, bright patterns in fabrics and wallpaper.
- Contrast is a very ‘in-trend’ theme generally, so consider using contrasting colours and textures to make for a more interesting room. For example a run of wardrobes with a wood finish, accented by high gloss coloured panels, gives a very sophisticated, high quality look.
- If you are considering wood in your room, the trend is towards darker woods, with a return to walnut being very popular at the moment.
- Think about whether you want fitted or freestanding furniture in your room. The line between the two is becoming more blurred and there is an increasing trend towards the use of iconic freestanding or semi fitted pieces as statements in the bedroom.
- Storage is key in today’s modern homes. Builders nowadays make the most of any available space; aiming to get as many bedrooms incorporated as they can. This in turn means that the rooms can be quite modest in size. Clever storage will allow you to make the very most out of your room.
- If you have lots of clothes and if your home is large enough, why not incorporate a dressing room into your design, as the ultimate extravagance – you deserve it!
- Think about lighting – the important thing about lighting is that it should create the right mood. The bedroom is meant to be relaxing, so if you must have spotlights, ensure they can be dimmed–down!
- Think about the ‘little extras’ - some fitted bedroom furniture companies offer wardrobes which light up inside as you open the door – ideal for partners who get up at different times in the morning.
- If you are planning a teenager’s bedroom, then the desk area is very important. Teenagers, more than anyone else, tend to work in their bedrooms, so a practical and flexible solution for a working area is essential.
- Give some thought to the flooring. A luxurious carpet will add glamour to an adult’s room but may not be ideal for spillages from young ones. For a children’s bedroom, a laminate or cheaper carpet may be a better option until they are older.
