KBSA welcomes new consumer protection legislation but warns retailers to beware rogue customers

13 January 2009

The Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialist Association (KBSA) has welcomed new consumer protection legislation from the Government which came into force on 1 October 2008, but warns that retailers may fall foul of a new ‘cooling off’ period.

A change to the Government’s Doorstop Regulations cover means that consumers are now entitled to a seven day ‘cooling off’ period on all work and products undertaken and offered by salespeople, provided the service is worth more than £35. This offers additional protection to consumers who fall victim to the pressures of doorstep selling.

However, whilst these laws are designed to protect consumers, the KBSA is also alerting retailers that they may find themselves at the mercy of a rogue customer, should they have signed the contract in the customer’s home rather than the showroom.

Graham Ball, Chief Executive of the KBSA comments: “Whilst we are delighted that the Government is tackling the problem of rogue traders and cowboys within the home improvement industry, retailers do need to be aware of what this legislation means to them and the best way to avoid problems is to ensure that all contracts are signed in the showroom.”

KBSA retailers that provide ConsumerCare Plus are now also able to offer the added protection of TrustMark status. More than 132 retailers have signed up for the Government-backed scheme that helps consumers find reliable and trustworthy professional tradesmen to carry out repairs and improvements to their homes.

“It is so important, now more than ever, for retailers to differentiate themselves from the competition and offer consumers a guarantee that their money will be safe with a KBSA member,” adds Graham.

“Trading conditions are going to be tough for 2009 and the KBSA is committed to offering its members the very best advice, support and package of money-saving benefits to help them through this difficult period.”
