"KBB retailers are going to the polls in the midst of an economic crisis that has made business very difficult over the last eighteen months.

“Feedback from our members suggests that they are looking for a new government to give small businesses the help they need to help them grow their business and create more jobs.  Over taxation and unnecessary legislation are the two biggest problems faced by our members.

Clearly the controversial plans to raise National Insurance Contributions (NIC) is an example of this. A rise may well reduce the deficit but will penalise those businesses that want to expand by taking on more staff.

Research undertaken by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and the Centre for Economics and Business Research has estimated that a 1% rise in NIC will cost 57,000 jobs in the UK; this would be detrimental to any recovery in business confidence.

“With regards to legislation recent research by the FSB found that 60% of businesses list regulation as an obstacle to job creation.

“KBSA members do £175million worth of business so a relaxation of regulation and tax will have a positive impact.  The KBSA will be looking for some positive measures that help rather then hinder business as we work our way out of this recession.”
