The home office has never been more in demand, says the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association. More and more professional people are finding that they now have the technology and the support from their employers to make working from home a viable option on a full time or part time basis.

The world of work is changing as many companies restructure in order to create a more flexible workforce and at the same time achieving a better work/life balance is an aspiration that is becoming a reality for many.

In a recent survey, leading recruitment company Reed found that 28% of those who responded said they would like to spend more time working from home in the future.

These changes are shaping the way the home office is developing with more homeowners looking for a professional working environment, so says the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA).

"Incorporating an office within your home represents money well spent as not only does it facilitate a better more productive working environment but it will add extra value to your home and could well provide an essential selling point," says KBSA chief executive Graham Ball.

Follow the KBSA's top tips for the perfect home office:

  • When planning your home office keep these questions in mind: Is a dedicated room required solely for your office needs? Is space limited? Will the introduction of office equipment spoil the nature of the home? Can it be integrated sympathetically?
  • If you don't have the space available to create a dedicated office KBSA retailers can help by providing a selection of bespoke office units that can be tailored to fit any available space, in a foldaway format if necessary.
  • Good planning and well-chosen furnishings are key for an effective home office. It is likely that a lot of time will be spent in the home office space so installation and maintenance of a suitable working environment is well worth considering.
  • The biggest 'trap' for would be home-workers is the temptation to make do with a half hearted, off the shelf solution which not only spoils the home's character but very soon proves to be inadequate for the user's office needs.
  • Office furniture is available in many styles and finishes. Make sure you choose a range that will not only set a professional, inspirational tone to the home but will also blend in perfectly with the rest of the home's interiors.
  • Never accept a quote for design and installation until a retailer has visited your home. Once a complete survey has been carried out, ensure you have a full quotation for installation. All KBSA members have been trading for two years or more and offer a complete design and installation service.
