Top Tips for Compact Kitchens

18 March 2009

The average kitchen in the UK is of a modest size. Our favourite glossy magazines and catalogues usually feature kitchens that are large and this makes it difficult to imagine how you can create such a dream kitchen in your own home. However, with a little extra thought, a modest sized kitchen can include everything you need and still look stunning.

The following ten tips from the KBSA should help you plan the perfect petit kitchen!

1. Quality kitchen manufacturers make a large range of cabinet sizes to customer order so there is no need to waste precious inches with filler panels.
2. Don’t forget that wall cabinets can be extended up to reach the ceiling and provide extra storage.
3. There is now an array of clever storage options provided by the main kitchen manufacturers, such as carousel shelves for all your pots and pans, and under-sink recycling drawers.
4. Choose light colours such as white, creams, pastels and limed wood effects or go for a high gloss look as these will reflect the light.
5. Worktops have a strong visual impact and therefore these should also be kept light, giving a mild contrast to your choice of cabinet.
6. Don’t forget that the space at plinth level can also be used as drawers, or heaters can be fitted.
7. Special slimline appliances offer modern facilities in a reduced space.
8. You can stack cooling and laundry appliances to save on space.
9. Leading appliance brands also offer fantastic built in steam ovens, coffee machines and microwaves which will leave your worktops clutter free.
10. Some national kitchen manufacturers are even installing flat screen TV’s within wall units, offering hi tech kitchens in a small space!

If you are considering making over your kitchen, make your first port of call the KBSA.
