Are you tired of your current bedroom and want an exciting new look, but don’t know where to start? Let the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA) guide you through the best way to plan a bedroom makeover:
• Many people make the mistake of assuming that there isn’t much to planning a bedroom. They think that all it needs is a bed and a few bits of furniture, but it can be much more. For example, it may also be where you sit at a computer, or at a desk to write letters, where you watch television or read a book.
• Look in magazines for inspiration and ideas so that you are fully armed before you start planning.
• Storage is very important to the bedroom and needs careful thought. If you are not lucky enough to have a walk in wardrobe then you will need to ensure you have enough wardrobes and drawer space for everything – wall cupboards on the wall behind the bed are one good solution in a modest sized bedroom.
• The bed is the biggest single item of furniture in the room so first plan where this will be and work around it. Draw a plan of your bedroom and mark where the bed will go.
• You also need to bear in mind electric points around the room – how many are there and are they placed in the right positions for your new plan? If not you will need to have extra sockets fitted before starting any decorating.
• Think about what flooring you want. Carpet is obviously the traditional choice and is a warm, soft option but is it right for you? If you have young children in the house perhaps a hard wearing laminate or wood floor would be better – it is certainly easier to clean up spills!
• Lighting is also an important factor to consider. It is best to have reading lamps or wall lights by the bed but if you do have a desk or computer then you will also need a brighter light or lamp in that area.
• The colour you decide on for your bedroom may influence how you feel when you wake up every morning so do give it some careful consideration. Yellow is meant to make you feel happy, so may be a good choice – especially on those winter mornings!
• Finally, make sure you visit a bedroom manufacturer that you can trust – A KBSA retailer for example, offers peace of mind as they have to stick to strict criteria in order to become and remain a member of the Association.
Armed with the above tips, you can now begin planning a bedroom that will function well and stand the test of time!
