Top tips on planning children’s bedrooms
04 June 2008
Planning a child’s bedroom can be a difficult task. Ideally it needs to be versatile enough to last a few years without the child growing out of it, yet still be nice enough for them to enjoy. It will also need plenty of storage!
The following tips from the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA) should help you plan a top bedroom for your child:
- The best option for flooring is wood or laminate as spills can easily be mopped up or wiped away. Wood or laminate also allow you to change the colour of the room easily, whereas if you go with blue carpet for example, you may struggle to update it without having to buy new carpet.
- Storage is of utmost importance in a child’s room – it is not just their clothes; their toys and games can mount up very quickly. Ensure you plan for a large wardrobe and drawers plus under-bed storage and plenty of shelves.
- The most versatile way of decorating a child’s room is using paint. At least this way you can paint over it if the colour becomes too babyish for them. You can even paint scenes or letters on the walls or ceilings to give it that personal touch.
- If you want the room to last as long as possible, theme the room with the accessories only. Bedspreads, lampshades, alarm clocks and pictures can easily be replaced, whereas wallpaper is a much bigger job to update.
- Older children will often use their bedrooms to do homework and play computer games. Create a desk area with plenty of storage for CDs and computer peripherals – a purpose built computer station is ideal – and make sure you have enough power points to avoid trailing wires.
- If your children’s bedroom doubles as a playroom, brightly coloured stacking toy boxes and hanging storage nets are ideal for a quick tidy up before bedtime.
- Make sure you install lighting that works for different situations. A bright main light is useful for general playtime and whilst working at a workstation, however you will either need a dimmer switch or a softer bedside lamp for when you put the children to bed. Clip-on lights are also great on kids’ beds for story time.
Armed with the above tips, you can now go out and find your nearest KBSA bedroom retailer and begin planning a bedroom that will function well and stand the test of time!
