The old cabinetry was made from solid oak, with beautiful shaker style door, but unfortunately the layout was badly thought out. The kitchen was pushed into the top left corner of the room, leaving vast amounts of space empty and not providing nearly enough storage or worksurface for my clients. Both keen cooks and gracious hosts, they wanted a new space where they can prepare complex recipes from scratch and have their friends and family around. The room had to have a cozy atmosphere that can double up as a place for a drink on a Saturday night, as well as a breakfast space to enjoy the sunlight in the morning and make the best of the view.

I started with the seating. When I spoke to Martin and Victoria, they were adamant about having the overhang on the back of the island or on the side close to the window, however they quickly came around to my idea of the black oak T-shaped bar and downturn. It gave them the first focal point in the room and a line of contrast to elevate the otherwise neutral and calming palette. The positioning of it also made sure the seating is not only optimal for socializing, but open to the gorgeous garden views and directly under the sunlight in the morning.

Somewhere for their finest crystal glasses was important and we agreed on a position which is also immediately visible when entering the room for the custom display cabinet. Internal lighting and a mirror back inside added more layers and depth for a full showstopper effect.

They both loved their coffee, so I introduced a pantry with pocket doors, where their new Siemens bean-to-cup coffee machine could go, along with all the other small appliances they use throughout the day. The stunning oak drawers underneath added an element of class and vintage style.

I introduced a Quooker tap in black matt with all the features – boiling, filtered and sparkling water. At first they weren’t sure, but after a quick demonstration and a taster in the showroom, they were convinced of it’s value. A larder fridge and freezer side by side provided them with much needed extra food storage for their bulk buying and meal prepping, while keeping a seamless line with the furniture doors.

To finish off the look, we used the gorgeous Dekton Khalo in 20mm, giving the client fully versatile easy to maintain, scratch and stain resistant worksurface with a stunning design, that modernised the otherwise very traditional space and tied in all the colours together. The stunning size of the island provided a vast preparation area with drawer storage and bins, ready to serve for many years to come, the solid Ash doors allowing a future re-vamp should the clients taste change.
