This space was challenging as there is no clear space for a consistent flow but lots of opportunity for pinch points! To over-come this I opted to work with zones as the main basis of this design rather than flow, although there are elements of flow which have also been achieved. These are broken down into:

  • Wet zone - with dishwasher, sink, bins and small appliances such as a kettle.
  • Prep zone - the island, creating an inclusive and social environment for meal prep.
  • Cooking zone - tucked around the corner, out of the initial sight line as you enter the home and the kitchen.
  • Storage zone - moving on from the cooking areas is the ‘food pantry/space tower’ allowing for all items to be at hand. Additionally, this is also where the refrigerator and eye-level oven is situated.

Further to these zones there is also a custom dresser unit on the right as you enter. This houses all cups, glasses and cutlery to hand for anyone looking to set the table (or island) for meals and is close to the sink and the dining area. This planning allows for reducing crossing paths, issues with pinch points but also multiple people with in the space. The positioning of the dresser naturally guides people away from the stair slope within this corner.

Despite initially looking for a low maintenance space we introduce floating oak shelves throughout the room. Having initially worked with wall units, the space felt cramped and uninviting. To help our client fully appreciate the impact of the zoning design process and workflow potential in their new kitchen, we visited the Blum Test Drive Centre. They were able to stand with a full scale layout of the new space and plan storage, move around each other and assess any pinch points before ordering.

With a strong sense of style and this being their forever home, it was important to capture their personalities. Our client selected specific finishes for this project including a custom green and custom sheen pippy oak. Our flexibility and adaption with these finishes allowed our client to focus on the functionality rather than needing to compromise on aesthetics. It was key to have a serene space with a feel of being engulfed in nature, which these colours and texture achieve. In addition to the impact of switching to shelves over wall units, the oak tied each zone together. With mix of the warm oak and cooler green which evolves throughout the day, this space feels almost alive and heightens the feel of being in nature. The simple white surface maximises the light and expanding the space, especially where the island waterfall downturn separates the wet to prep area.

As soon as you enter this home your eye is instantly drawn to the kitchen. With a sense of intrigue and warmth.

It has been gratifying to learn that this space has performed as the multifunctional space hoped for with homework being carried alongside meal prep, family and friends congregating in the space and bring the family together. This space has heaps of hidden features and a huge amount of function making it a space to enjoy hours in.
