Daniel McKeating Kitchens By J.S. Geddes (Kilmarnock)

For this project, we were tasked with designing a small, compact kitchen that seamlessly blended with the traditional aesthetic of our client's home while also making a bold, modern statement. The original kitchen, with its high gloss finish, felt completely out of place in the traditional interior. Our challenge was to create a kitchen that respected the home’s established style while also serving as a striking focal point within this small space. A key design challenge involved blocking up a lovely stained glass window that flooded the room with light. The original worry was that this would enclose the area, but by using materials that blended with one another, this worked perfectly.

After discussing the client's vision and needs, it became clear that they wanted a kitchen that was both functional and eye-catching, with a particular emphasis on flow and harmony with the rest of the property. We chose an off-white colour for the main cabinetry, a subtle hue that blends effortlessly with the walls and complements the space, allowing the kitchen to feel integrated and expansive. To add a bold statement piece, we designed a moveable island with a live-edge walnut worktop, introducing a natural, organic element. The island’s vibrant Netherton orange base ensures it stands out, while still feeling connected to the overall design.

To further enhance the warmth and texture of the kitchen, we incorporated a natural oak worktop, which adds both charm and practicality. The library ladder, serving as both a functional storage solution and a unique design feature, adds an element of character. Brass accents were thoughtfully placed throughout the space, from the light fittings to the ladder rail and handles, adding sophistication and tying together the modern and traditional elements of the design.

Through this project, our goal was to respect the home’s traditional character while introducing modern elements that would make the kitchen a stunning, functional showpiece. The final result is a compact yet beautifully designed kitchen that not only meets the client's needs but also exceeds their aesthetic expectations, with a sense of openness and elegance that is perfectly aligned with the vision for their home.
