The clients desired a luxurious hotel-style main bathroom to be used by themselves for bathing, as well as for friends and family when they visit. We had previously completed two en-suites for the family, and their brief for this room emphasised style over function.
During the initial meeting, the clients mentioned that they were not concerned about storage in the bathroom since it would primarily be used by guests and for their own relaxing bathing experience. They requested a freestanding bath along with a separate shower. The clients specified their preference for marble-effect tiles and brushed brass fixtures. Aside from these requests, they left the layout and specifications up to us, trusting our expertise as they were very pleased with the results from their previous projects with us. The budget for the renovation was set at £25,000, including VAT.
With this in mind, we developed several concepts centred around a bespoke washbasin handcrafted from the wall tiles, creating a unique contemporary design feature for the bathroom. We utilised the fireplace in the room, which was slightly offset to conceal the cistern and frame, and built out the chimney breast to achieve symmetry. This allowed us to create a recess in the wall inside the shower. To the right of the chimney breast, we placed the shower set back and designed a floating seat to enhance the luxury feel that the clients desired.
Since the washbasin was made from a 1000 x 1000 tile and utilised mitre joints, we decided to use mitre joints for tiling the rest of the room instead of tile trim. This choice further enhanced the room's refined appearance. We informed our installer to position the 1000 basin on a 1000 tile so that the grout lines aligned on either side of the basin.
We selected brushed brass fixtures from Crosswater to ensure uniformity in colour across all fixtures, from the taps to the towel radiator.
Mood lighting has been added under the washbasin and in the shower alcove. These lights can be adjusted between warm and cool white. They can be turned on independently of the main ceiling lights, allowing for a soft glow while bathing or during late-night visits without fully waking you.
The clients were overjoyed with the outcome and couldn’t believe the amazing finish we achieved. They loved having a bespoke, handcrafted basin. Additionally, they appreciated that each of the rooms we worked on for them was uniquely different. Their only downside was that they had no more bathrooms for us to renovate.
