With an extremely busy work life, my client needed somewhere to relax and switch off. Previously, the bathroom served two bedrooms. Now to be turned into her (and her husband’s) private en-suite.
She loved the idea of a free-standing bath. After years of showers over the bath, she was ready for something a bit more special, and with a home this size, it made sense to create a real standout feature.
Keen to warm things up with soft tones and bronze finishes to make the space feel cosy, elegant, and totally hers. Ultimately, a space where she could relax and feel pampered.
Removing the second doorway allowed for more flexibility in planning the new layout. Due to extensive works to the property, we were able to move the WC waste pipe, therefore freeing space under the coombe ceiling. The ceiling height here being compromised, made this area perfect for the bathtub. The bath is now visible from the bedroom and is a stunning focal point overall.
The room has a beautiful original arched window within the coombe space. This detail had inspired me to work on curve features elsewhere in the design. Curves are a clever way of inviting you into a space and directing you around. This made the selection of the Matki shower enclosure with a 20cm corner radius an obvious one, with no dominating structure, the glass serves as a seamless barrier, offering an uninterrupted view and maintaining a sense of openness. The curve of the corner paired with the brushed bronze finish is so elegant. Continuing this look above the WC, recessed shelving finished with a single piece of stone cut in an arch shape, using the fluted Ukiyo on the back wall, which is highlighted with LED lighting. The Ukiyo replicated behind the bath, ideal for storage as well as ambient lighting.
I wanted to create the feeling of calm and tranquillity through the material choice, the Dekton Marmorio has such a warm tone and using the 2.6x1m slabs has minimum grout lines, which adds to the smooth, seamless feel of the space, allowing the material’s natural beauty to shine and complements the rich veneer of the vanity unit. The use of Dekton allows for the flush plate to be cut into the stone. It’s so subtle yet adds an extra layer of refinement. Materials and details chosen all work together to create a sense of calm. The framing around the mirror in a soft, detailed moulding incorporates a traditional element with the contemporary materials, creating a beautiful balance. The wall lights enhance the traditional feel, the soft, diffused lighting adding warmth to the space. The space gives our client the sanctuary she desired but not only in design but in function, with smart storage solutions and carefully selected feature lighting ensured that every element contributed to the room’s ambient glow, creating a calming retreat after a long day.
