The brief was to transform a large, outdated bedroom into a modern, functional, and serene retreat. The clients requested a contemporary take on shaker-style doors, improved storage, a better dressing area, and a calming atmosphere to unwind in after busy days.

Given the room’s generous size, my approach focused on creating cohesion and balance through intentional zoning. I wanted to create clearly defined areas for the bed, wardrobe, and dressing table to enhance functionality while maintaining flow and tranquillity throughout the space.

To keep the room feeling light, I chose soft grey shaker door fronts and introduced wood-effect panel material to add warmth and contrast. This became a signature element, used in elegant dividing panels that subtly separated zones while adding texture and visual interest.

Lighting played a vital role. I layered ambient and task lighting to create a relaxing environment, while ensuring practical illumination where needed. Integrated lighting in open shelving and wardrobes highlighted personal details and added depth. Wardrobes featured grooved sensor-activated lights, while remote-controlled zoning lights could dim and shift between warm and cool white tones.

To add architectural interest, I designed the ceiling to be boxed down above the wardrobe and dressing areas to frame the furniture. Behind the bed, a soft halo light became a standout feature, offering gentle ambient lighting ideal for evening use.

To further define zones, I designed slatted divider panels with feature lighting. Whilst being a design statement, they helped define zones and introduced intimacy to the bedroom area. I then continued this design narrative behind the bed, which reflected light, added dimension and maintained a calm, cohesive aesthetic. The dressing area was reimagined by relocating it to the opposite wall, improving lighting, mirror placement, and layout. This move also made space for a custom bench — a thoughtful addition for the clients’ daughters, who enjoy spending time with their mum as she gets ready.

Storage was entirely bespoke, tailored to each client’s needs. The wardrobes behind the bed catered to the husband, while the dressing area was designed for the wife. Internal fittings included drawers, open shelving, half- and full-height hanging, and sloped sections to suit the angled ceilings near the window. This project is a great example of how considered design can blend style and practicality. Careful zoning, layered lighting, and thoughtful material choices resulted in a light-filled, sophisticated space that feels calm, elegant, and deeply personal. I thoroughly enjoyed working with these clients to create their dream bedroom, and we have gone on to do several more projects in their home.
