They wanted an edgy look using dark colours to steer away from a 'basic' design and wanted to achieve something unique and different, a spacious feel, so ideally no appliances on the island as they wanted a big clear worktop area.

I used an entirely dark matt palette for the furniture with a feature light granite worksurface to add a contrast and accentuate the crisp dark lines of the units.

I created a staggered wall effect using specially oversized deep overhead units and then a lighting detail on each wall unit run to highlight the extra depth and 'waterfall' effect of the wall unit design.

The sink is tucked discreetly in the back of the design as the client does not do much washing up and relies mostly on the dishwasher, but did not want a potentially 'dirty' sink area as a focus area of the design.

The client wanted easy and accessible storage, so I used large pan drawers on the island to emphasise the length using horizontal lines, as well as another two sets of pan drawers under the hob. The staggered position of the hob over these drawers created a centre line which the rest of the wall units were designed around.

The two tall units which housed an integral fridge freezer and a larder with Blum drawers were situated at the opposite end of the design to the two ovens. This created a unique 'book end' effect and gave my client a little more privacy from the dining area on the other side of the room.

The stools are situated on two sides of the island, which encourages a more social aspect for multiple people, rather than having everyone sitting in a line.

Tinted mirror splashbacks were used to reflect back the room to the person using the hob and sink but yet also provided a wipe clean wall covering to add practicality.

The client wanted a streamlined, modern look and wasn't keen on handles, so I used a handleless door style.

Lots of accessible base height storage meant that the kitchen is family friendly, and the children could reach their cereals, snacks and crockery, however the high-level wall storage meant that there was also plenty of 'out of reach' storage for those items either to be kept out of the way, or lesser used.
