Kitchens By J.S. Geddes (Kilmarnock)

The clients had been to five other kitchen companies for designs and no one managed to meet their brief.
The two non-negotiable element was to have an island in the space and the two areas (currently split with the ceiling beam), to feel like one area.
Style wise, they wanted to be sympathetic to the age of the red sandstone Victorian property, but they want a slightly traditional scandi feel incorporated.
We started with the island in the space and felt it necessary to straddle it between the two areas. It was important that the area around was not empty therefore we made bespoke size dresser cabinets to give the illusion of units / furnishings but without it encroaching into the passing spaces. This was something that no other company had come up with therefore the island looked completely empty in the space. We choose to do a double height tall bank of units but with a bespoke library ladder made by ourselves. This ticked the box for style and being sympathetic to the age of the property but adding mirror to the end of the tall bank, gave this look a fresh up to date feel. It allowed us to do something more decorative at the sink area as we had ticked the box on storage.
As the room was dark, we felt that a clean pallet worked well. We added a parquet flooring in as a nod to the age of the property but we added modern scandi hanging lights and floating units at the tv area to meet the aesthetic brief.
We used a real mix of materials and finishes to create this look.
There were brass fixings in the rest of the property so we felt in the interest of consistency, accenting them in the kitchen would be perfect.
Our two-tone use of cabinetry colours were clean, timeless and elegant. This worked well with the brief of more of a scandi feel mixed with traditional. We selected these colours after looking around the client’s house.
The quartz worktop had a vein of brass/ gold in it, which tied in perfectly with the brassware. We choose a white top due to the client’s concern of light in the space.
Mirror at the tall units was used in an antique format firstly to fact if we had put units in that position it would have overlapped the window. The antique mirror gave the back wall even more interest and in the evening when the light was on it, it looked fabulous.
We used painted wall mounted slated panelling behind the sink as there was original slated panelling in other rooms of the house, so it created a lovely flow between old and new. We then added wooded slated panelling under the breakfast bar and at the tv area to enhance the scandi feel. Teaming this with scandi dining chairs really allowed for the crossover of styles.
