The brief given from this client was to create a modern, practical kitchen with an industrial feel. The property was a small barn conversion, with exposed Oak beams and a vaulted ceiling.

The inspiration for this project came from Dekton’s industrial range in the form of “Trilium” giving the client the industrial feel they were after, but also a highly durable worksurface. The original floor had to stay, due to having existing plumbed underfloor heating, so the finishes chosen had to compliment the stone tiles. The original brief was to strip back the rear wall to expose the bricks behind, but due to the state of the brickwork we had to abandon this plan and instead used reclaimed brick tiles to tie in with other brickwork above the archway and around the windows. This not only added to the industrial feel, but helped tie the kitchen into the style of the property. A Bora downdraft hob was specified, leaving the brickwork free of any extractor hood and also drawing any grease and steam downward and away from the wall. The sink run was given a splash of colour with a Vlaze steel splashback, matching that behind the log burner and again helping tie the room together.

To add texture and warmth, we specified Spekva grey oiled oak as the breakfast bar on the island, which complimented the Beckermann concrete effect doors, but also created a more comfortable place to work and eat, warmer to the touch than the Dekton.

Lighting was added to the top of the beams to wash the ceilings with light, along with spotlights recessed into the beam above the hob to give substantial working light and highlight the brick wall. Buster & Punch pendant lighting above the breakfast bar adds drama and is a nod to the industrial styling the client loves. Handleless units throughout keep the design simple, allowing the real features of the design to stand out. Large drawers, pull out larders, bins and slimline dishwasher really squeeze the maximum storage out of a relatively small kitchen. Along with a single oven, combi microwave and integrated fridge freezer, this kitchen gives the clients everything they need.
