We have been working with our clients, Dawn and Kevin, for a few years now on various rooms within their home. The brief was very open: an elegant bedroom with a new dressing room. Clients were keen to see what I could do, trusting me completely based on our previous completed work.
The existing bedroom on the first floor had various angled coombs to the ceiling, making it tricky to achieve balance or symmetry within the space. I was determined to overcome this and came up with the idea of painting the ceiling black down to the picture rail therefore disguising some of the angles, also by dropping the ceiling around the perimeter of the room, this helped to create a central ceiling in a rectangular shape where a new ceiling rose, and feature light fitting is installed. By leaving a gap at the window wall by the dropped ceiling, this allowed the curtains to be recessed, meaning no escaping early morning light, and a much cleaner look.
A bedroom normally consists of a bed, side cabinets and wardrobes. I wanted to do something different here; there would be a dressing room off the bedroom, so no need for wardrobes. I decided to build out the wall where the bed would sit and create three arches. This depth also helps to absorb some of the coomb above. The arches are clad in solid marble, an opulent detail that would require a skilled craftsman to achieve, which thankfully they did. All three arches display gorgeous wallpaper by Cole & Sons showing a Japanese traditional scene. Lilac and subtle burgundy tones in the marble are seen in the paper and the daring burgundy used in the dressing room.
Walls are finished with ribbed panelling to a half height, adding texture to the space.
Bedside cabinets in dark oak veneer are suspended on the walls and finished on top by recessing the marble. A subtle detail where the front and sides of the unit surround the stone edges. Handy phone chargers are set within the stone, too.
The bed sits within the centre archway, and either side has a wall-mounted bronze lamp which can be angled for reading. Alabaster wall lights with bronze detail are positioned on either side of the bed and either side of the black arch doors leading to the dressing room. These arch doors again complement the three arches on the back wall. Fluted glass panels allow a spread of light, but are more discreet for the dressing area.
The ceiling detail flows into the dressing room, as does the carpet and wall colour used in the bedroom. When the arch doors are open, the space feels as one. A central island/dressing table finished in the same lilac marble. Furniture in matt burgundy with bronze handles. Stepped to suit the ceiling coomb. Enough storage for both Kevin and Dawn, internally organised with various storage solutions with open shelves on either side of the arch doorway to lighten the space physically and with LED.
