This design transforms a large open space into a sleek, high-functioning kitchen-dining hub that reflects Libby and Stephen’s professional lifestyle while anticipating their growing family. It balances bold, contemporary aesthetics with practical spatial planning for cooking, entertaining, and everyday living.
Maximising Functionality with Hidden Solutions:
One of the key challenges was to incorporate multiple zones—kitchen, dining, pantry, and utility—without interrupting the visual flow of the open-plan layout.
By bringing the tall kitchen bank forward from the back wall, a seamless front was created that conceals both the pantry and utility room. Inward-opening doors allow access to the utility room and pantry while maintaining a clean and minimal aesthetic when closed, perfectly supporting the couple's desire to hide the "ugly side" without sacrificing usability.
Kitchen: A Fusion of Design and Innovation:
The kitchen island, clad in Neolith Colorado Dunes, serves as a striking centrepiece. The tall bank, finished in stained, crowned oak, offers a warm contrast to the micro-cement surfaces that seamlessly cover the floor, walls, and ceiling. It integrates an invisible induction hob, achieving both elegance and high performance for passionate home chefs.
Hidden behind Blum’s sleek Revego pocket doors is a sink, a dishwasher, and two V-ZUG ovens, offering intuitive guided cooking, precise temperature control and seamless smart home integration—perfect for Libby and Stephen’s love of experimenting and entertaining with effortless style.
The use of integrated Fisher & Paykel refrigeration supports their need for ample fresh food storage, while the hidden cooking and sink areas promote the clean, uncluttered lines of the space. The recessed herb trough built into the island adds a vibrant, natural touch and speaks directly to Libby and Stephen’s appreciation for fresh ingredients and hands-on cooking.
Dining: Comfortable Elegance for Everyday and Occasions:
The dining area was carefully designed to feel connected yet distinct. By incorporating banquette seating with deep under-seat storage, the table is drawn inwards to avoid the low 1800mm ceiling height at the room’s edge, enhancing comfort and proportion.
The LED-lit shelving, mix of open displays and glazed storage creates an atmosphere of relaxed sophistication—ideal for both intimate dinners and larger gatherings.
Utility and Pantry: Discreet Powerhouses:
Within the hidden utility space hosts the V-ZUG RefreshButler V6000, which delivers wrinkle-free, detergent-free garment care, speaking directly to the couple’s love for innovative gadgets and smart tech. Stacked laundry machines and plentiful cabinetry ensure functionality without visual bulk.
The pantry doubles as a secondary kitchen, offering space for mixers and other culinary tools, keeping the main kitchen clear for socialising and plating. It’s a smart way to expand their cooking capabilities without visual clutter—ideal for experimenting with new techniques and hosting with ease. There is also a secondary sink and dishwasher, which keeps prep and cleanup discreet—an essential detail for entertaining up to 12 guests.
This design blends aesthetics, innovation, and foresight, reflecting Libby and Stephen’s passion for cooking, entertaining, and technology. With fluid zones, hidden high-functioning spaces, and a bold material palette, the kitchen and dining area becomes the heart of the home—and a statement of future living.
