Joanna Geddes-Campbell and Felicity O’Hare (Entry 1) Kitchens By J.S. Geddes (Kilmarnock)

Our clients are a stylish, middle-aged couple with a love for socialising, music, technology, and contemporary art. Having previously worked with us on a kitchen installation, they returned with a new vision—this time, for a bold and expressive home bar.

Materials and aesthetics:

We embraced the client’s love for expressive design through a mix of unexpected materials, patterns, and finishes. Ceiling wallpaper sets the tone from above, adding visual intrigue from every angle. A variety of ORAC panel profiles were applied to the walls and painted in a mix of wacky, high-energy colours, creating a lively, layered texture throughout the space.

The bar itself features a striking contrast of materials: a veined green XTONE worktop anchors the bar with a luxe look, paired with a sleek Silestone worktop in a plain blue for added punch. Tinted mirror panels were used to enhance the bar-like feel, reflecting light and colour while adding depth.

To reinforce the ‘bar’ concept, black wall-mounted metal cages were incorporated—referencing traditional bar shelving and adding a slightly industrial edge. The result is a unique, high-impact space that brings together colour, creativity, and culture—perfectly reflecting the clients' vibrant personalities.

Creativity:

The juxtaposition of luxurious materials like the XTONE and Silestone worktops with the more utilitarian black metal cages introduces a creative tension, enhancing the space's visual and emotional impact. The unexpected use of wallpaper on the ceiling and the playful approach to colour and form push the design towards a more avant-garde, artistic direction, making the bar feel like an interactive art installation rather than just a functional space.

This project highlights the fusion of functionality with aesthetics, where creativity is not just a theme but the very essence of the space. From the cutting-edge materials to the unconventional design elements, the bar pushes the boundaries of traditional interior design, blending innovation with style in a way that makes it a true work of art.
